An app for two people

Say something
small.

Us pairs you with one person. You leave them a note of a hundred characters, no more, and it lands on their home screen. No feed, no thread, no typing dots.

Go on, write to Mira. Press send and watch their phone.

100

Sent. It's on their home screen.

Their home screen

  • No feed
  • No threads
  • No read receipts
  • No typing dots
  • No group chats
  • No streaks
  • No likes
  • No followers
  • No algorithm
  • No profile photo
  • No unread badge
  • No last seen

Setting it up is shorter than reading about it.

  1. 1

    Type your name

That is the whole sign-up. No email, no password, nothing to confirm in another app.

  2. 2

    Read six characters out loud

One of you generates a code like K3M-9QX. The other types it in.

  3. 3

    Leave the app alone

You are paired. From here on the widget does the work, and opening Us is optional.

A note, a picture, and the hand you write it in.

Everything below is one screen deep, and it looks like it belongs on whichever phone it lands on. Switch the preview and see.

Notes

A hundred characters, then it's their turn.

Write the one thing you wanted to say. It replaces whatever was on their home screen before it, and there is only ever one note, so there is never anything to catch up on.

Limit
100 characters, counted the way emoji are actually written
Delivery
Straight to the widget. Opening the app is optional
Sealed
Encrypted on your phone before it leaves it, pictures included
History
The last seven days on the free plan, all of it on Us Together

The medium widget, iPhone home screen

Photos

One picture, same hundred characters.

Some things are easier shown. Take one there and then, or pick one out of the roll. It becomes the widget, edge to edge, with whatever you wrote sitting on the bottom of it.

Source
The camera, or one picture from your library. Never the library itself
Size
Resized to 1600px and sealed before it goes, so it travels light
Storage
Only the current one is kept. The next picture replaces it
Caption
Optional, and still capped at 100 characters
Plan

A photo note, iPhone home screen

Drawings

Or draw it, badly, in about four seconds.

A square of paper and a real set of tools. Scribble something, and it goes out exactly the way a photo does, and the drawing becomes the widget on the other phone.

Tools
Pen, eraser, line, rectangle and ellipse, filled or outlined
Colour
Every hue there is, with its own opacity. No shortlist of eight
Nib
A slider from a hairline to a thick marker, previewed at actual size
Undo
Mark by mark, as far back as you like, and clear to start again

A drawing, iPhone home screen

Faces and inks

Nine hands to write in, nine inks to write with.

Pick the face and the colour before you send, and that is how the note is drawn on their phone too: on the widget and in the history. The mark is the other way round. You add one for the person you write to, and it sits beside their name on your widget and in your message box, on your phone and nowhere else.

Faces
Nine of them, from rounded and classic to handwritten, script and typewriter
Inks
Nine colours, each with a light and a dark version so it reads either way
Their mark
Heart, moon, flower, sparkle, infinity, a bicep or sunglasses. Add one, change it whenever
Who sees it
Only you. It sits before their name on your widget and in your message box
Where
In the composer, before you send. Nothing to set up and nothing to undo
Plan
Three faces and three inks free, all nine on Us Together

A note in Script, iPhone home screen

End-to-end encrypted

We hold your notes. We cannot open them.

The key is worked out on your two phones, from your private half and their public one, and it is never sent anywhere. What reaches us is a sealed envelope.

The key lives only on your phones, so nobody can restore it for you, us included.

What our server holds

An illustration of a sealed note: on our server it is unreadable ciphertext.

Sealed before it leaves
Notes, photos and drawings alike. We store the envelope, never the note.
The push carries nothing
A notification is a knock. Apple and Google never carry a word you wrote.
Outside the seal
Your name, the time, and which face and ink you picked. Never the words.

Every review comes with the other half of it.

An account is a pair, so we asked both people. These are unedited, posted with permission, and no one was paid for them.

We tried every messenger there is and ended up owing each other replies. Now there's one line on my phone and I don't have to do anything about it.

I write mine on the walk to the station. Eight seconds, and it's the best part of the morning.

My sister is nine hours ahead. A note already sitting there when they wake up beats a missed call every time.
IfeManchester
They left a note the morning of a hospital thing. It was waiting on my home screen before I was properly awake.

We live in the same flat. It is still the nicest thing on my phone.

They left “there's soup on the stove” on a Tuesday and I think about it more than I should.

Pricing

One price for the two of you.

Start free and keep the app forever. The paid plan takes the limits off: nine faces, nine inks, as many photos and drawings as you like, and the whole history rather than the last week. Whichever of you pays, both phones get it.

The questions people actually ask.

Read all of them
  • No. An account holds exactly one pairing, and that is the whole shape of the product. If you want to pair with someone else, you disconnect first.

  • No. There are no read receipts, no delivery ticks and no way to tell whether anyone has looked at their home screen. That is deliberate: a note you owe a reply to is a message, and this is not a messenger.

  • Yes. Take one there and then, or pick a single picture out of your library. Us never gets the library itself, only the one you chose. It is resized and sealed on your phone before it goes anywhere.

  • No. A note is encrypted on your phone and reaches our server as a sealed envelope. The key is worked out on both of your phones from your private key and their public one, it is never sent to us, and we hold nothing that opens what we store.

  • It deletes the account itself: your sessions, your devices and the shared history, everywhere, and it disconnects the person you were paired with. It asks twice, because there is no sign-in and no backup, so there is no way back into an account once it is gone.

It takes one code and about eight seconds.

Download it, type your name, and read six characters out loud to the person you had in mind. There is no step after that.

Free to start. No email, no password, no card.
